Chris Field | Disruption for Massive Good

How to Step Out of Our Box to Make a Difference

Chris Fields is the founder and executive director of the Mercy Project, which was founded to help free enslaved children in Ghana.

In this episode, Ford Taylor (a past guest on the Eternal Leadership Podcast) was invited to join the episode to chime in on the topic of disruption.

This is Chris’s definition of a disruptor: A person who is uncomfortable with the truth, but shows up, sticks around, and stays until a new truth has been born.

The first step is to admit that there are things that make us uncomfortable.

There are things that we don’t love about ourselves. Maybe it’s the way we speak to our employees, the way we spend our money, the way we spend our time, our fixation on income. It’s different for every single person. But the first step is to acknowledge those.

Chris also shared his “disruption map”, which involves:

  • making a commitment
  • creating an action plan
  • persisting

We keep hearing that we need to “think out of the box”, but Ford Taylor pointed out that simply leaving the box doesn’t really work. He emphasized the need to change our thinking even before we leave the box, because it’s going to be uncomfortable. Then we need to consistently work according to the action plan, even if it’s just 2 or 3 simple steps.

The first step is to admit that there are things that make us uncomfortable.

We can’t do it alone, we have to walk with other people. We have to share our “stuff”. Set our plan in place, show it to somebody, ask him to hold you accountable and walk alongside you.

Only those with too much pride have the ability to judge others.

Disruption can be anything, anywhere, and in any industry. Sandra closed the show with this challenge: Think about what you can disrupt today.
