Dan Schawbel | Back To Human

How Strong Are Your Relationships at Work?

Dan Schawbel is a New York Times bestselling author who has interviewed over 2,000 of the world’s most successful people, including Warren Buffett, Anthony Bourdain, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. In this episode, he talks about the concepts in his new book “Back to Human: How Great Leaders Create Connection in the Age of Isolation”.

The idea for the book came from an interview that Dan did for a documentary called The Revolution Generation back in 2017, where he was asked, “What’s the biggest challenge for your generation?”

While Dan came up with several answers, he kept going back to “isolation”.

The overuse and misuse of technology has created the illusion of connection, when in reality, we feel more disconnected, less productive, less healthy, and less committed to our teams and organizations. – Dan Schawbel

This is the result of constantly looking at our devices and trying to use technology as a crutch when communicating, even though face-to-face conversations and phone calls can be more effective in many situations.

The message is not to eliminate technology, but to use it wisely and only when necessary.

Here’s a sad statistic: Almost 10% of the global workforce has zero friends in the office, yet so much of our time is spent at work.

If you don’t like the people you work with, that paycheck is only going to be so great for so long. Eventually, you won’t have a strong connection with your team, and you will leave.

Another fascinating statistic: One face-to-face meeting is more effective than 34 emails back and forth. That’s mind-blowing!Not having your phone is the new vacation. – Dan Schawbel

Staying true to his background as a researcher, Dan shared another interesting statistic: 24% of workers said that the positive effects of a vacation time like more energy and feeling less stressed… disappear immediately upon returning to work!

If you work like a robot, you’ll be replaced by a robot. – Ong Ye Kung, Singapore Education Minister
