Have you ever had a friend who just radiates joy? My friend Ousmane, from Burkina Faso in West Africa, is one of those people. He is always looking for ways to grow and learn how to be better in all areas of his life.
He asked me last week, “Hey John, what is one thing that you have already learned in 2020?”
A great question. I had some ideas of my own, but always a fan of mentor-ship, I wanted to hear what my friends Dana Adams and Max Chauvin would answer if Ousmane had asked them. Dana is a successful realtor and author and speaker and wrote the best-selling book ‘Live Your Gift’ and Max is a theoretical chemist who no runs the largest sports complex in his state and is transforming the community of Halifax, Nova Scotia through his work unifying nonprofits, businesses and local city officials.
Here are our “3 Tips to Start 2020 Off STRONG!”
1. For when my worry or anxious thoughts start to spin out of control:
Self-awareness is key! Instead of making negative assumptions, seek mentorship from a trusted source and ask questions from a learning perspective that can clarify real vs. perceived problems and find solutions together. A great resource for this is the book, “Change Your Questions, Change Your Life,” by Marilee Adams.
2. For when I’m feeling frustrated or disappointed in others’ performance or attitudes:
Simply assume that others are doing the best that they can! Remind myself that wherever they are coming from at this moment in time, they are bringing to the table the best they are able to offer. Accept and try to understand them. Realize there are a whole bunch of things going on in their lives I just don’t know about. With this positive dynamic, we can build something greater together!
3. For when I’m afraid I’m going to fail at my goals in 2020:
I must connect each goal with something that is really important to me emotionally. What will achieving that goal give me? I will write these things down, then I will share it with someone I trust. Accountability is crucial!
