Today, Steve Arterburn will be leading us in a prayer for the election. Steve is the founder and chairman of New Life Ministries and host of the #1 nationally syndicated Christian counseling talk show New Life Live! heard by 2 million people each weekday on 200 radio stations nationwide and on Sirius/XM radio. Steve is also the author of many best-selling books, including “Every Man’s Battle.” Steve founded Women of Faith conferences, which is attended by over 5,000,000 people.
We’ve got an election coming up that needs a lot of prayer because the day after the election, 50% of this country is not going to be very happy. In fact, this one seems to have more people that are going to be angry, not just unhappy.
Steve is going to be praying that we can all come to some kind of mature adult level of acceptance of the reality. We have no idea who’s going to win, who’s going to lose. But a lot of times people are angry because they think that when the other side wins, it’s the end of the world or that “these evil people are in control of our nation now and all is lost.”
In Peter 2:13-14, he says to the people, “For the Lord’s sake, submit to all human authority, whether the King is head of state or the officials that he’s appointed.” Now, that was written when the Roman emperor Nero was in charge and massive, horrific persecution of Christians was going on. Yet, Peter was saying that we need to obey those in authority.
If you look at Daniel 2:20-22, it says: “Praise the name of God forever and ever, for He has all wisdom and power. He can control the course of world events. He removes Kings and sets up other Kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the scholars.”
God is in control, no matter who wins. It’s our job to trust, to surrender, and if we win, to do it responsibly and not gloat…but if your candidate loses, don’t believe that it’s by accident. God is in control. He’ll take care of us. It’s not the end of the world.
When we accept something, it doesn’t mean we endorse it or we approve it. It just means that this is the reality in my life, and I need to accept this as adult and move forward. When we do that, we have peace and serenity.
So I want to pray for our election; not for one side to win or the other, but for whomever it is whose candidate loses, that all will be able to come to some level of spiritual acceptance and an additional radical trust in God, no matter what.
Prayer
So Lord, I thank You for all your blessings. And I ask You to forgive me, forgive this nation. Be who you say You are; You are rich in mercy, God.
We know that when the election comes, Lord, that there are going to be some upset people, some folks that feel loss, others are angry.
God, I pray for the whole country and I pray for each individual that, if you feel like your side didn’t win, you’d be able to accept it and that you would see that God is still in control. I pray that those whose candidate wins would have empathy and try to understand how difficult of a time it is for those who lost.
God give us your peace, help us, fill us with your Holy Spirit so we have a supernatural ability to accept the realities of our lives. Acceptance, God, is the answer for so many things; help us live into it.
Thank you, God, that You are in control and that no matter what happens in this election, it will all work toward the ultimate and eternal good that You have in mind for all of us. In your name I pray, Amen.
