How Do We Operate in the World As Believers with People Who Have Completely Different Belief Systems?
Seven-time author Garris Elkins returned to the Eternal Leadership Podcast and talked about the ideas in his latest book, The Sound of Reformation.
This episode touched on a controversial, super heavy topic. The Church now is living in a divide between the secular and the sacred. Is the Church still relevant in today’s society?
We’re going to bring traction to this vision in the community without waiting for it to come to us. – James and Anna Kramer, Pneuma 33
People will engage us if we have a message of hope and not judgment.
What we have to do is build a trust equity that only comes when we prophesize hope over people… hope that’s anchored in who God created them to be.
Love is seeking the highest good for another personGarris Elkins
But how do we even start seeking the highest good for others? Once we build a trust equity with someone, we can start aiming for the highest good for that person. People need to belong before they believe.
We also need to learn how to influence instead of control.
You have to connect before you can pull. – John Maxwell
John Ramstead proposed a challenge: Think of people who are at the opposite end of the spectrum of what you believe in. Invite them for coffee, and just listen and ask questions. Find one thing that you can do to serve them forward.
99.9 % of the problems we have in America would be gone if people could just sit down and talk with each otherGarris Elkins
Garris shared a brilliant explanation of how we divide ourselves further in this secular and sacred illusion that we have. A lot of people leaving the Church now are not walking away from God, they’re just walking away from the model that we’re telling them that they have to receive.
For his final advice, Garris declared, “God will get you there. Just admit to Him right now that you don’t know everything. Become a child, become a student, become humble, and be pliable.”
