224 Liz Roney | How To Beat Imposter Syndrome

Get Unstuck by Asking and Listening

Liz Roney was a model while in college, graduated with a business degree, then went to South Korea to teach English. She returned to the United States to pursue a corporate career, where she “made all the mistakes”, lost too much weight, developed all kinds of illnesses, and compromised some or her values.

At that point, if her poor physical state did not kill her, her emotional state would have led her down a road that most people would consider unforgivable.

When you put yourself in situations where you know that you are not in control, it reminds you who is. – Liz Roney

When Liz’s mom (who is her biggest positive influence) asked her “What are you trying to accomplish?”, Liz didn’t have a good answer. She realized that she had sacrificed so much of herself that she thought “I’d better be the best at this job that I can be” despite being trapped in a job that did not help her grow positively.

How does one escape a trap like that?

Liz advised people to: first, ask yourself “Why is this important?” Then, ask yourself “why” four more times, until you get to this core element of really understanding what your calling is. It would be even better if you can ask someone to ask you the “five whys”. That someone should not accept your easy answers. He or she should push you to be as intellectually and as heart-centered in this exploration as you can be.

John also asked Sandra to hop in and share how she battles the treacherous “impostor syndrome”. She responded that the simple but extremely effective solution she came up with is to surround herself with a group of “encouragers”. Liz used a similar approach. She got support from good people and changed her mindset.

We have a responsibility to be of use through God’s direction and to help take care of His children which are on this earth. – Liz Roney
