How to Move from Expectation to Agreement in Two Simple Steps
Patrick McBane is one of John Ramstead’s mentors. In this episode of the Eternal Leadership Podcast, Patrick divulged his vulnerabilities right off the bat. He recalled many of the challenges he went through as he built up the story of how he improved himself and his life with the help of people he met along the way.
On the topic of CEOs or business owners who are reluctant to expose their vulnerabilities, Patrick suggested asking oneself, “Why am I uncomfortable?” Is it because of fear, guilt, or shame? Or is it because we know that it is an area that we are unfamiliar with.
Once we get familiar with our vulnerabilities, it becomes a little easier to share them. – Patrick McBane
If you are a CEO or a business owner with people looking up to you, your credibility will increase exponentially when you put yourself out there. It earns your team’s trust and enhances cohesiveness, which leads to better productivity.
People don’t act on what you communicate, they act on what they think you communicate. – Patrick McBane
Patrick emphasized the importance of having conversations around stuff that are assumed to be already known by everyone. We all have expectations, and we tend to assume that everybody else knows what each other’s expectations are. When one or more of those expectations are not met, conflict arises.
The “social covenant” is a simple process that can manage those assumptions and expectations. While it’s simple, it is definitely not easy. Listen to the episode to hear Patrick’s explanation on what it is and how you can implement it. Not only did he share examples on how it can be used in the workplace, he also narrated an inspiring story of how it was applied to a little league baseball team… with wonderful results!
Patrick’s final message is about hope: Our world needs more hope now more than ever before. Bring some hope to someone.
