Today’s podcast guest is a distinguished individual in the field of business and leadership. His expertise in the past decades has shaped him into the best version of himself, always ready to extend help to those who are in need. In this episode, he highly emphasized the importance of preparation. May we learn from his wisdom and sharing, and hopefully, begin to live our lives the way he did.
“More often than not, we do not put the value on it until we pay the price.” – Mike Mooney
Mike emphasized that we tend to overlook the value of things and of people around us. We fail to recognize that just like everything else, what we might have today may be gone tomorrow. We do not consider the fact that we live in a temporal world. That is why at times, we do abrupt decisions that hurt other people, without realizing that they may be gone instantly. The price to be paid is high and at the same time, filled with excruciating pain.
“Crisis is never a question of where, it is only a matter of when.” – Mike Mooney
Preparation matters. Not that we are thinking pessimistically, but we are just preparing for whatever life will throw at us. Mike emphasized that just like everything else, the crisis is constant. We are not assured of a crisis0free tomorrow. We are not assured that there won’t be any chaos, issues, problems, pains, and fears for the future. but one thing that we can assure is that we prepare ourselves for it.
“Just own whatever it is.” – Mike Mooney
I like the idea that Mike emphasized the concept of owning one’s responsibility, may it be positive or negative. We tend to get credits. If it is something good, then we are so proud to be a part of it, but if it is something negative, we tend to point our fingers to others. We try to make others believe that we are never part of anything close to it. But as what Mike shared, it takes a really matured and responsible man to own responsibility, most importantly if it is something that is not good in terms of the outcome.
Life is complicated and the only way to make it less in terms of complication is to make sure that we are prepared for whatever crisis that may hit us and that we are fully attuned to changes.

About the guest:
Journey – not just his favorite band from the ’80s (and he can still air-drum 90% of their music) – but also symbolizes new connections, learning, building, embracing change and keeping an open mind to the possibilities ahead. That journey leads to his primary focus, which is to Drive People Forward through personal reputation and brand design! If you have skin and a heartbeat, you MUST be thinking of your reputation and brand.
On his book, Reputation Shift – Lessons from Pit Road to the Boardroom, is a practical roadmap for people to build, strengthen, and repair their reputations. He learned over the past 25 years that reputation crisis is never a question of ‘if’, rather only a matter of ‘when’. The only true questions to ask are, “am I prepared?” and “what’s my reputation worth?” His work is at the analog level – the human level! We all need someone on our team who can ‘see around the corners’, see our blind spots, and identify not only risk but opportunities to move us towards new heights of success. He works with entrepreneurs, leaders, young/seasoned executives, business owners, and corporate teams to open lines of communication, trust, teamwork, and collaboration. He delivers those messages and experiences through keynotes and workshops that shift mindsets and perspectives around reputation to create authentic distinction.
