The ROI of coaching with John Ramstead

Today’s episode of the AEC Leadership Today podcast features John Ramstead. John is a certified leadership coach who works with top leaders and organizations to implement effective coaching for the benefit of their employees and their organizations as a whole.

Proper Coaching is Involved

John started as a navy fighter pilot and then had a very successful career in business. After a near-fatal accident, his life trajectory changed. His faith and support from his family and amazing friends have made him the person he is today and helped lead him to his new calling. Now he is a top leadership coach, and he inspires leaders to accomplish great things for their organizations through coaching.

“Coaching is about drawing out from somebody their experience, their training, skills, and knowledge and taking ownership of it by applying it in ways that get results.”

—John Ramstead

In this episode, we discuss:

  • What is coaching. Coaching isn’t just about sitting down with someone and telling them how to do their job. There are many aspects of coaching.  Whether you’re doing formal one-on-one coaching, spot coaching, or just having conversations that lead to coaching, they will all be unique to the person you coach. Their individual goals, skills, and experiences should be at the center of your coaching, so you can guide them into being the best person for that position.

  • The problem of managers not being engaged. We have phenomena happening where two-thirds of employees are not engaged in their workplace, but we also have two-thirds of managers feeling the same way. If our managers aren’t engaged enough to engage the employees directly under them, we have a different problem. We have a leadership problem.

  • Why having a “Coaching Culture” is a competitive advantage. Bersin and Associates reported that organizations that have a coaching culture have a much higher business performance. Organizations that have managers who are coaching effectively and frequently have a  21% higher business performance. Similarly, organizations that prepared senior managers to coach were 130% more likely to realize higher business results. Even better, they had a 33% higher level of engagement.

  • How organizations will be more successful if they understand the motivations of younger generations. Millennials and Gen Z don’t have work/life balance in their vernacular. With them, everything is connected. They might be on their break, on their phone planning out their evening, and that’s okay. Younger generations need appreciation, and they need to feel that their work aligns with the rest of their lives.

  • How top organizations approach coaching and why executive and management coaching helps us keep up with change and be successful.

  • Why you need to slow down in order to speed up. Being too busy might mean you need to make a change. Especially in smaller organizations, we cannot be so busy that it risks the success of our organization. If you don’t have an hour every two weeks to focus on yourself and how your work is affecting your personal life, a change needs to happen. If this is the case, many times, it is also true that you don’t have enough time to coach your team effectively. This will hurt your chances of success.

  • How to make work more fun and why that, like so many other things, all starts at the top.

“Gen Y and Gen Z want to feel appreciated and that their work is meaningful in the way it connects to their values and the rest of their lives”

—John Ramstead
